An Intriguing Tale Of Being An Owner

Owning your own business isn’t as easy as it seems to most people. Not only do you have to take care of the store.. you have to make sure that your employees are taken care of. Say for example a First Aid Box, you have to make sure you have one in your establishment, in case of emergency.

Supplying the staff with Kinesio Tape for their injury is very common here but at least it is easy to get all our medical supplies online and hassle free. These medical supplies are not cheap at all but it is definitely a must to have. Of course, the employees would not know about the cost and where we get them from, they just know that it is there.. so convenient eh.

No wonder the other video store had this up their window today. We had just noticed it.. but i am guessing they are trying to pick up the customers of the one that just closed down at the corner. $7 for 7 days rental for 7 movies… !!! how to beat these kinda prices..?? i guess they must be hoping to monopolize the whole renting thing downtown..??

Oh boy..!! you wouldn’t believe it.. but yes.. we drove by the pizza place in town. .and it was gone. On the door it said.. tenant was locked out . .because rent wasn’t paid. Wierd..!! Seriously, i can’t see that happening.. because we do know the owners .. and they are decent ppl, i guess we just have to hear it from the horse’s mouth .. the next time we see them. Seeing them closed down this way .. is making me darn worried. I really wonder what the real reason is… because they only just acquired this business like 6 months ago.. 8 months top.

The man besides looking after the business loves to dabble abit here and there on investing. Of course I am a wee bit worried because as we all know investing is risky business, and I do not like risky business because we have too much at stake.

So i recommended that he collects and invest on US Mint Coins instead because as far as i know they never depreciated in value. Nonchalant, aloofness, the I-don’t-care attitude was the kind that our regular supplier had been giving us. .when he has a bad day. It almost feels like he was our customer and not the other way round. An attitude .. i cannot understand why PB would take . .and not really care too much. Maybe it is a man’s thing..?? they donch sweat the small stuff..?? but i do..! and because I do.. i make sure.. i make it really difficult for PB to give this particular supplier alot of business. Since you have the “tidak-apa” attitude.. we will bring our business elsewhere.

A customer was in to let us know that some business in town went outta business because they couldn’t pay their rent. Well.. the source wasn’t so reliable.. so we didn’t say very much… plus we didn’t really noticed anything.

This evening.. we took a drive past the said store.. and yes.. the inventory was all gone..!!! shocking..!! because the owner of the store is our neighbor.. and we didn’t hear not a thing from him. Wonder what happened there..?

I don’t think we have an auto recycling store here, so to find stuff that you need for your cars, vans or even truck, one have to go online. Some small garages here must carry some stuff.. but not everything, and I am figuring that they must cost alot more than what some people can afford locally.

My customers use midwest auto recycling as they specializes in used engines and transmission. With one of the strongest warranty nationwide, how can you go wrong with it. All engines are completely assembled and they are started, inspected, tested for leaks and cleaned before being slow. Transmission are test driven and visually inspected and cleaned too.

Wow..!! shocking that ppl are working ..!!! in this country and in this town.. where men even go on welfare with the excuse that they need to look after one kid.. because the woman ran away .. now that’s shocking to know. I hear it is everywhere in Canada and also in the United States that people do that. But since i see it so clearly in this town, the more I cannot help but wonder if these statistics are correct..??

I find it quite sad that there are families as many as 3 generations on welfare… because they were never taught about hard work .. and working. All of these ppl never worked in their life. I see them walking up and down, up and down Main Street and some of course pops babies out every year and if they can they would have the next one within the next month or less. *shrug* There is a problem here and no one wants to address it.

A customer of ours who was reminded that she still had a game that was out late for a few weeks now, told our employee that she had sold the game back to us.. and that PB had bought it.. and now she had to go buy another one to replace the missing one..???!!!?? *slap forehead* .. where is the logic in that..?? and nope.. a check on our record didn’t show the same game coming in for sale.. nor returned. Seriously, you tell me.. what to think about customers like that..??

When it comes to cars, trucks, vans and just about any auto-mobile, i get to learn about them from the best. Richard my brother-in-law and my Budd my father-in-law are great with their hands and you can see them fixing up cars, vans and anything that moves every weekend. They just love getting dirty.

So when one needed a Toyota Radiator, they told me to go online to look for a reliable source and the quality must either match or exceed their original one. I found one that even guarantees it and they even back each and every auto radiator with unlimited lifetime warranty. Now that’s what i call exceeding and going beyond the call of duty. You know where we are getting all our radiators from now onwards.

It took 1 man to change the internet from Aliant to Eastlink yesterday.. and guess how many did they need to switch the internet over today..?? 3 men..! yes. and i wonder why..?? isn’t it really the same thing..?? I guess i shouldn’t be too shocked.. since this is the Canadian way of working.. 1 work.. and the rest just looks on.

I had kinda forgotten that the guys from Eastlink (internet) were coming tomorrow.. to change over our internet connection from Aliant (another internet provider). They had come a few weeks ago.. and offered PB not only a better connection (15mbit) … but at a better rate than Aliant.

We had been using Aliant for the last 8 yrs.. and nope they didn’t counter offer.. to keep our business. Sad as it is.. but i’m not really sad to change it.. because of cost effectiveness and a more rapid speedier connection for internet is great. Saving a good $30 a month . .means a good $360 a year .. that we could use for other stuff in the store. If you have been in business as long as we have.. you would know that every little bit helps.

Turning websites into blogs is what we do for some of our customers in town. There has been a demand for it of late because I guess some people are beginning to realize that a blog can help to buil your business. Of course I am not the one doing all this work for our customers, it is the spouse/boss who had been doing it.

For a layman like me I wouldn’t even know where to start, those ftps and phps, I really don’t know much about it. It was easy enough for the man to update information and sort it out by categories or by tags, but a getting a new look for an entire blog is as easy as downloading a theme.  It only takes a few seconds if you know what to do.

Reading up constantly on good sites that shows you how things work and gives you useful information is important for the kind of work we do. A lot has changed over the years when it comes to coding; javascript and flash which are now among the most popular formats is something that’s new to us, whereby we had depended on HTML for the longest time.

We used to do good on Sunday at the store.. because it was only recently that the big boys are allowed to be opened on Sundays. That was the law here in Nova Scotia, strange as it might sound, as a consumer, i would want everything to be opened .. but as a small business owner, I say no.

Yes, this Sunday shopping affected us so much, we decided a year ago, to close on Sundays instead of wasting manpower and electricity. Having said that, we also have problems getting ppl to work on Sundays. When we hire them, we do tell them about working the weekends but a month or so into work, they would have all sorts of excuses not to work on the weekends and in the end, the man and I had to work instead, so it really defeats the purpose of hiring someone to work during the weekends.

I make it a point to never consciously go into anything that has to do with politics. In any town, country or even establishment that I’ve been in .. I’ve seen some really ugly things… and no way was I gonna get involved here in Canada.

In any place, there will always be the old boys .. and their money .. and also those who have recently been here.. and have some money. Whatever the case, you can never fight them.. but I’m not gonna join them either. I’ve been asked many a times.. by our customer/s to take a more active role.. in the offices… or immigration work, but nope.. i’m pretty sure.. i never wanna be involved. But I’ve offered my services to foreign students who were lured to this town, that would be my part in giving back to society in Canada.

This town had welcome .. the Big Boys like Walmart, Staples and Movie Gallery a few years ago. They bend backwards for some of these big boys.. and put in extra traffic lights, opening extra roads and what else that weren’t reported.

This town said that it can only do us good.. by bringing the Big Boys into town.. to attract tourist .. and other people from other towns. Last week we heard from the grapevine that another small business will be winding down its business by next month. Reason..?? can’t compete with prices of these Big Boys. Instead of helping small businesses from THIS town expand, they rather spend all those money for the Big Boys that don’t need any money. No logic.. but this is Y-Town for you.

When you have a child, you want the best for them and in case of an emergency a child medical alert can save your child’s life. Yes..! i busted my chair at the store today. I guess i just have to admit.. that i am putting on weight even though I would like to think that it is all my fibroids.. growing bigger. Guess i better check out some weight loss pills while I am getting my other pills from the pharmacy, don’t want to embarrass myself when the customer is in.
