Yes.. even with wood flooring with such bad winter.. it can be hard on the floor. Every customer/s walk in with wet boots.. and shakes off .. their snow and wetness right in our store.. irregardless whether we have thick carpets or not right where the door is. We mopped as much as possible.. but the man don’t seems deter or disturbed by the wet floor .. or how the customer/s is damaging the floors and carpets. It is no point even trying to educate them. .for they just keep doing it.
When you own a business as long as we have .. you think you see all sorts. But everyday, you learn something new.. and everything.. ppl still try to con you. It’s not even the older crooks.. that tries it.. it’s the young kids. They know that if they get caught, they are too young to be charged.. so they dare do stuff.. like cheating, stealing and breaking in. One even tried to sell us stuff today.. and claimed that he was helping a friend who has cerebral palsy. Of course, we try to do the right thing.. and didn’t wanna chance that he was not telling the truth. But later this evening.. we found out the things that were sold to us were stolen.. *sigh*. How do small businesses like ours stay open..??? *sigh* .. when you have so much crooks in this town.
February is almost gone.. and every year we wonder when the warm whether is gonna come .. and we whined about taking a vacation and can`t wait till we get out of this cold and wet weather. Orlando vacations are very enticing especially during the March break, I know of our regular customer heading that way with her entire family to escape the cold here. If it wasn`t for the business, I will be the first to head out there.
Today .. another competitor opened its door in the mall. Like anyone who has small businesses .. one cannot help but wonder how this is gonna affect us. Of course, we survived Walmart, Staples and Zellers as well as SuperStore when they renovated and put in a huge game department, and of course good old Movie Gallery .. but competition is competition.
There are certain things the competition cannot compete with us.. but there are things we can’t compete with them.. like the quantity of the used games. But having said that.. i know that we do have a long standing loyal customers.. and someone needs to share that piece of pie for sure, thus making it a lot harder for small businesses like ours. But we survived .. the big boys.. so we are hoping to survive one of the biggest game store in the province.
Besides having no babysitter.. because she is up in Halifax today.. for a friend.. we managed to accomplished more than normal. A car inspection .. a hair cut for the kid.. and the boss.. and a busy store. Yes.. non-stop when you have the least help for the day.. go figure. But we survived.. like we always do .. so that was great.
Yes.. how ridiculous that title looked.. yet they are really making the ppl in this town do that.. at $5K a councillor. While other municipality are only using $3K, our good old town is using $5K to send them to Whistler, Vancouver. Firstly, you and I know how expensive .. it is .. to vacation in Whistler. Sure.. in the name of meeting the Canadian Federation of Municipalities at the Telus Conference Center.. but do we really need 5 councilors to go fight for a town of only 8,000 ..???
C’mon, you think we are dumb..?? Sure you need another to hold the Mayor’s hand.. but do we need 4 ..???? this is utterly ridiculous.. if you ask me. First a new courthouse at $14.8million for a town of 8000 residents .. and now more of ridiculous spending.. when we don’t even have the money for it. Surely, the town councillors do not think that we small businesses are making so much money do they..??? this is really NOT RIGHT..!!! THIS WONDERFUL TOWN..!!
Yes.. ! i called them thieves.. because had the man not come back to the store in time.. i would have lost half the price of the correct and original price for a game that cost us more than what those little thieves wanted to pay for it.
I have to constantly remind myself to be careful.. from now on. You see .. those thieves peeled off stickers from our games for sale.. and put on a lesser price sticker .. on the more expensive one. .and tried to cheat me. I’m mad..!! darn mad..!! because two of the kids. i watch them grow up..!!
I do because my current landlord never made me feel like they would go an extra mile for us. I was talking to the old landlord.. about our chinese custom.. since the Chinese restaurant is currently his tenant.. and it would be awfully nice if he would give them a money plant.
I told my current landlord about it.. and he made a joke.. about me being demanding.. and closed his ears with his fingers… *sigh*. Just a $19.99 pot of plant.. and he wouldn’t even do it, nor did we get a box of chocolate.. during Christmas.. like the old landlord gave us. Some how.. the old landlord gave us the impression that we can always count on him.. even for retail resumes if i so chose to work for someone else in the retail sector. I really wished that my old landlord had something to rent to us.. when our lease runs out on this one.
With the new airline and aircraft ready to fly .. in the next few weeks.. from Yarmouth to Portland and Yarmouth to Halifax.. one can only hope that this summer will bring the town… better business. For years.. the old town councils.. didn’t seems to be doing much. But last year.. the town voted all the oldies out.. and so far.. i havent’ seen a lot of changes.. or news. Is no news good news..?? Not in my opinion. I hope our new councils.. are not all hot air.. and had forgotten what they promised.
As a owner by association to my spouse’s business, I try not to run my spouse’s business .. but let him decide the important stuff.. but make subtle hints and suggestions.. whenever necessary. Living in such a cold country.. and owning a business is no easy feat during Winter.. because the oil to heat up the store.. can make one a bankrupt.. if one is not careful.
After 9 yrs in business.. the only way a small business like ours can survived .. is to run the business yourself.. and not depend on employees. In our 9 yrs of business.. none of our employees.. ever think of saving the heat or gas nor power when we are not around. Some even left the door unlocked and fought with us.. that they tried their best.. to lock the door.. and if it didn’t lock. it wasn’t their fault. Yes..! such octrocious attitude.
The town or the government won’t help ppl like us.. to stay afloat.. but they would forked out millions.. to help the big boys. A chat with another business owner only make me thankful .. that we have good ppl for our vendors.. and am glad that we are able to keep the power and oil bills down this year. But what about the next year.. and the next..?? and here Nova Scotia Power just announced that they are making us pay for their upgrades in the next few years. Awesome.. NOT..!!
I have a constant need to do good .. it seems. And truth be told.. i’m quite zealous about it.. unfortunately, I can’t seems to find a good place to fund raise for. Truth be told.. this year.. i had wanted to start early instead of just during Christmas time. And the spouse and I had chosen a plafe to help fund raise for .. but little did i know that the place we were planning to help had someone who cheated us ome 7 yrs ago.
How can we work with someone who cheated us.. ?? when we were struggling so hard to keep our new business afloat then. Would you .. do good for an organisation. when you know that someone working for them.. cheated us..?? I just can’t get pass it.. so I wasn’t gonna put myself out.. what about you ..?? would you ..??
